Footwear and orthoses

Footwear and orthoses: treatment has to work in real life

An orthosis does not work alone: it depends on the footwear, available space, activity and the patient's tolerance.

MEDIPIE approach

The best orthosis is of little use if it does not fit the shoe

Footwear affects stability, available space, pressure, comfort and adaptation. At MEDIPIE we therefore do not design an orthosis without considering the patient's real footwear.

We assess everyday use, work, sport, shoe type and tolerance. The aim is for treatment to be clinically reasonable and genuinely usable.

What we check in each shoe

  • Usual, work and sports footwear.
  • Internal space, last shape, sole, heel counter and wear.
  • Daily activity and hours of use.
  • Orthosis objective: unloading, support, stability or comfort.
  • Compatibility between materials, volume and tolerance.

Why footwear is part of treatment

When an orthosis is indicated, it is designed around the footwear in which it has to work. Sometimes a change or adjustment in shoe type is also recommended.

An adaptation that is too bulky or incompatible with the shoe may lead to poor tolerance. Fit and comfort therefore need to be checked.

Practical check

The same patient may need different solutions for different uses

Everyday, work and sports footwear do not always provide the same space or require the same stability.

Everyday use

We review shape, fastening, removable insole and comfort during the actual hours of use.

Work

We consider time spent standing, surface, mandatory footwear and restrictions on volume or safety.

Sport

We check fit, activity, shoe changes and compatibility between the orthosis and the specific movement.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions

Can I use the same orthosis in every shoe?

Not always. It depends on the orthosis volume and shape, whether the shoe has a removable insole, the last, fastening and the activity. When moving an orthosis between shoes we check that the foot is not lifted, compressed or made unstable.

Should I buy new footwear before the appointment?

Usually it is better to wait and bring several pairs you already use. We can then assess which are compatible, how much space the orthosis needs and which features to look for. Buying first without knowing the design may result in the wrong shape or volume.
